PIONEERS & INNOVATORS

Since the inception of movie-based entertainment attractions, Showscan has been a leader in engineering, technology development, production, distribution and exhibition. Showscan has pioneered innovations in film production, technology and engineering. In 1984, Showscan created the first major simulation ride created for entertainment purposes and debuted its innovation of digital sound synchronized with film (Tour of the Universe). The Showscan process received a special Oscar for its excellence and visionary impact. Almost thirty years after creating its first successful simulation attraction, Showscan has over 100 simulation and specialty attractions open in 35 countries around the world. Many of these attractions are located in premier theme parks worldwide including Futuroscope in France, Gardaland in Italy, Giroland in Egypt, Everland and Lotte World in Korea, Parque de Atracciones in Spain, Leo Foo Village and Formosan Village in Taiwan.

FILM LIBRARY

Showscan has created the ultimate thrill ride film library available for simulation attractions everywhere. Our library ride films are available in virtually every film and video format and frame rate. We have partnered with such industry leaders as Industrial Light & Magic, Apogee, QED Communications, Boss Films, Sony and Bayley Silleck Productions. Showscan has produced such award winning ride films as “Devil’s Mine Ride”, “Cosmic Pinball”, and “Street Luge”. These ride films showcase the full spectrum of Showscan’s abilities to produce exciting experiences using live action, special effects and CGI techniques. Showscan is also acclaimed for its productions of custom films produced for corporate-sponsored programming or corporate branding messages and its award-winning video walls and video presentations. Custom films were developed and produced for experiences such as “Celebrating Us” produced for the Australian World Expo in 1988; “Nature Rediscovered” and “Concerto for the Earth” produced for Instituto Nacional de Industria for the World Expo hosted by Spain in 1992; “Olympic Spirit” created for the Olympic Spirit Park in Munich, Germany; “Life is a Rollercoaster” produced for the International Center for Life Trust in Newcastle, England; and “Leonardo’s Dream” a co-production with Istituto Luce (now Cinecittà Luce) in Italy.

From the earliest days of Showscan, the objective of all product development and film production development was to push the envelope of what was known to be possible to achieve the seemingly impossible.

FUTURE FOCUSED

The pioneering of future innovations continues to be a focus for Showscan. Showscan is exploring the next frontier in film production – a digital film process that doesn’t just emulate film; it is far superior in both 2D and 3D applications. The transition from a film-based medium to an all-digital medium is being driven by the 3D market. Showscan is developing “Showscan Digital”, a digital film process, which will increase the clarity and impact of the individual images, translating to a more powerful experience for the audience. Showscan Digital is a digital film format that combines the stunning image quality of 65mm Showscan film with technical enhancements to overcome the shortcomings experienced in both 2D and 3D film formats, eliminating the motion artifacts derived from the 24 frames-per-second standard. Showscan Digital’s innovative technology and solutions are being developed by Academy Award-winning special effects innovator Douglas Trumbull and his highly experienced team of motion picture experts.
